Open Courseware Resources 

Several universities and programs around the world offer free access to their course content, including syllabi, curricula, multi-media and various other types of materials.  Open courseware programs offer accenullss to thousands of courses spanning a vast range of subject areas.  For access to programs that focus primarily on dentistry or health, IFDEA recommends the following links.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) developed MedEdPORTAL as a free publishing venue and dissemination portal to support educators and learners as they create and use on-line teaching materials, assessment tools and faculty development resources.  

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) have formed a partnership that will allow the AAMC to expand MedEdPORTAL to include dental education resources. The collaboration represents the first time academic medicine and dentistry have come together to share teaching resources across universities and throughout the world.

Health OER

Health OER aims to: engage university leadership in implementing appropriate institutional OER policy frameworks; train faculty and students in the collaborative development and utilization of OERs; establish a framework for a longitudinal study; and produce an evidence-based long-term logic model for health OER that stakeholders will own and in which funders will invest.  The OER materials produced in this initiative will be made freely available to students, faculty, and self-learners around the world.

 Open Michigan

Open.Michigan is a University of Michigan initiative to create and share knowledge, resources, and research with the global learning community. Open.Michigan is committed to open content licensing and supporting the reuse, redistribution, and remixing of educational materials. The Open.Michigan community builds upon established and emerging U-M open initiatives, including the rapidly expanding Health Sciences Open Educational Resources (OER) initiative. Participation continues to grow as individuals, departments, schools, and organizations in the U-M scholarly community emerge and join in. Current participants include the Dental School, Medical School, Nursing School, School of Public Health, School of Information, School of Education, College of Engineering, and University Library. Open.Michigan projects exemplify the diversity of initiatives underway at U-M that relate to and support open access. OCW Consortium Logo

A collaboration of more than 100 higher education institutions and associated organizations from around the world, users can access thousands of documents and materials across the Open Courseware Consortium's collection using keywords, or search institutions individual libraries from the consortium's website.

 

MIT OCW Logo

MIT offers course content, lecture notes, problem sets, and labs on 1800 courses.  Some courses offer full text, photos and lecture videos and demonstrations.  Materials can be translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Thai.

 

UMass OCW Logo

Courses offered on the UMass Boston open courseware site include biology and health sciences.  The open courseware initiative is fairly new at UMass, however, the collection is expanding as more faculty are contributing materials.

 

University of the Pacific 

University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has produced a video demonstrating the surgical removal of a mucocele by delicate dissection.

 

eHuman

Stanford University digitized a complete course of professionally filmed gross anatomy lectures by Yale anatomist Dr Richard Snell. The library includes lectures on anatomy of the heart, thorax and abdomen.

 

Tufts OCW Logo

Access syllabi, course content and lectures on the Tufts Open CourseWare site.  Courses are offered in  Basic Human Pathology, Geriatric Dentistry, Histology, Tissues and Organs, Implant Dentistry, Oral Public Health and Community Service Program and Preclinical Complete Denture Prosthodontics.

 

More than 130 free oral cavity images are available on the Health Education Assets Library.  HEAL is a digital library of multimedia teaching resources for the health sciences.  The comprehensive library includes access to tens of thousands of images, video clips, animations, presentations, and audio files to support healthcare education.  Searches can be conducted for peer-reviewed material only, by keywords, material type, and by the name of the contributor.

 

 

OER, or Open Educational Resources, offers course-related materials fully searchable by keyword, subject area, grade level, conditions of use, language, and media format.  Material offerings include syllabi, lectures, lesson plans, homework assignments, quizzes, lab activities, pedagogical materials, games and simulations. Material from libraries and collections in the OER database are resources from digital media collections or libraries of digitized primary sources.

 

WebCast Berkely Logo

Every semester, UC Berkeley selects courses and events for live viewing and on-demand replay over the Internet.    Subject areas include reconstructive surgery, orthopedics, dentistry and cardiology.  The free RealPlayer plug-in, with broadband connections such as DSL or cable modems are necessary for optimal viewing.
